| Celebrate New Year's Day on Prospect Hill |
[Dec. 29th, 2009|11:57 am] |

On New Year's Day each year, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission celebrates the raising of the first American flag to feature thirteen red and white horizontal stripes. Know as “the Flag of Grand Union,” it was first raised by George Washington over the Continental Army’s encampment on Prospect Hill during the siege of Boston in 1776.
The event begins at 11:30 am at the City Hall parking lot, where re-enactors (including 'George Washington' on horseback), fife and drum players, and local elected officials assemble for a short procession. The parade reaches Prospect Hill Park at noon, where there will be a ceremony that includes raising a replica of the First Flag onto the top of Prospect Hill Tower. Coffee, hot cider, and other refreshments will be available. In past years, people have been allowed to climb to the top of the tower, but I can't guarantee you'll be able to do it this year.
I've been going to this event for a few years and have always enjoyed it. To get there from Davis Square, take the #88 or #90 bus from Davis Square at 11:30 am, and get off either at City Hall (if you want to join the parade) or at the first bus stop on McGrath Highway (if you just want to walk up the hill yourself to the ceremony). Sometimes the bus ends up driving behind the parade.
Here's a the official city press release for the event. |

| Nutritionist near Davis or surrounding areas? |
[Dec. 28th, 2009|02:14 pm] |
In support of my New Years resolution to eat better, does anyone know of a nutritionist that they know and love? I need someone who can help plan meals working with my unique set of constraints (such as there are not a lot of vegetables that I like and I don't like to cook).
Near Davis would be nice but I'll take anyone within reasonable driving/parking or T accessible.
Thanks! |

| Can I borrow someones woodshop for a few hours? |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|06:26 pm] |
I'd like to make a wooden ring for my girlfriend out of ebony - I have a broken upright bass with a nice ebony fingerboard that's otherwise useless. So, I'm wondering if someone would allow me use of their woodshop (basic tools and perhaps a wood lather) for a few hours so I can make this ring..
I'm reasonably competent in a woodshop - I wouldn't need much supervision...
Willing to pay for the time used...
Thanks! Derek |

| Trash-day curb Alert: TV stand, moving boxes, kitchen trash can |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|04:48 pm] |
On the curb in front of 24 Washburn Ave in Cambridge, just down from Teele:
* A bunch of moving boxes. Already broken down. Not rain-damaged.
* Crate & Barrel TV stand. Wheels, two shelves plus a top that will hold about a 30" tube TV or a larger flat-screen. Light weight but sturdy. Lift it from the bottom, though. The shelves stay in place fine if you're pushing it around, but if you lift them up they'll come right off.
* Perfectly adequate, totally clean, white plastic 13 gallon kitchen trash can with swinging lid. Doesn't fit in my kitchen.
* Perfectly adequate, totally clean, totally boring white bathroom size 3-gallon trashcan. |

| Wanted: band to play The Steve Katsos Show, 12/29 |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|02:57 pm] |
I know it's seriously short notice, but the Steve Katsos Show, a talk/variety show taped in Arlington, MA and broadcast throughout New England (including Somerville Community Access Television), is looking for a musical act to play on Tuesday night, 12/29.
We had a musical act cancel on us last minute, so if you could perform for us, please respond to this message and I will provide more details.
The only requirement is that the act has an album to promote (CD, iTunes, CD Baby, etc.), or has shows in the area.
Check out clips here: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheSteveKatsosShow
Appreciate any assistance here.
Thanks, JM |

| Cloth scraps |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|10:46 am] |
I have about a garbarge bag's worth of scraps to give away. Only that much in volume because there's one medium-poofy scrap (soft soft blue-gray faux something-or-other), and one downright furry one (the navy blue one in the photos). Do you want it? Comment and I'll leave it on my front porch, corner of Packard and Powder House Blvd (10-12 min walk from Davis, 7-8 min walk from Powder House Square).
Just in case more than one person wants it, please wait to get a reply from me before coming over.

| #262 - "Chafed Dickens [5 of 5]" |
[Dec. 25th, 2009|01:51 pm] |
#262 - "Chafed Dickens [5 of 5]"
The finalle to the Chafed Dickens storyline, and the last strip of 2009. I wish to thank everyone for the support in this 10th anniversary year, and those who cheered me on during this Christmas Weekly spurt. Have a Merry Christmas, a great holiday season, and see you all in 2010!
This final strip in the Chafed series underwent some changes since I first mapped it out several years ago. It was originally intended to be a Mark and Mike strip, with the two of them discussing the dream. Mike wonders if he learned the obvious lesson, but Mike replies, "Who could concentrate on what they were saying? Those woman were hot wank material!" However, I decided to change it when I saw inspiration from an online "critic":
"The problem with OEL is that IMAGE comics, that Ninja High School guy, MegaTokyo, and Scott Pilgrim, already came up with the idea of stealing anime and manga ideas and art first. [And if I want to really be a dick about it, the Sexy Losers guy, which is why he's resorted to Kevin Smith-style humour to cover up his weakness in character development. Although I will admit that Japan did rip off his magic sex doll idea with that manga and movie..." from here, emphasis mine.
Weakness in character development? This made me do a double take. I've heard this criticism before and it always struck me as an odd criticism to find in a gag comic. Sure, the characters are all two-dimensional. That's because in a gag comic, the gag is more important than the characters -- the characters existence is to get to the laugh. Initially I tried hard to not have a lot of recurring characters, but I found that established characters were handy as a shorthand towards jokes. In a four panel comic, the less explanation one needs to get to the punchline, the better.
Since SL is a gag comic, I've strayed from developing any characters to maintain that shorthand. Mike jerks off anywhere and anytime. Mrs. Shibata is a horny housewife. Chie gets semen in her face. Touro fails to get Madame X in bed. That's all you need to know about these characters. Developing the characters any further would ruin them utterly, and SL would change from a gag comic to being another pseudo-love opera. The characters would learn and grow, and well, let's be honest, learning and growing is a lot less funny than fucking up.
So FUCK character development. It was never my intention to do a happy-good-feely comic with characters that you could laugh and cry and otherwise identify with. This is potty humor. This strip is an acknowledgement that these characters are icons of their idiosyncrasies and nothing more. |

| A long shot -- all-day Silent Night? |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|05:42 pm] |
Some years ago, sitting in egregious traffic on Christmas Eve, I happened to find a radio station that was playing nothing but "Silent Night" for the whole day. It amused the hell out of my husband and me for a good long time. (The Japanese Girl band techno fusion version remains my favorite.)
I have looked, sporadically, since then for the radio station. I think it was a college station? It was definitely very local -- we lost it once we were much past Wellesley. Since all of my usual radio listening is NPR, I don't even know where to start and was hoping to appeal to the collective wisdom of the Davis Sq. community.
Of course, it could be that it was something that station did only once, or that a bored DJ did, but I really hope it's an annual event. I'd love to listen to it tomorrow as I start baking my 8 batches of cookies!
Thanks. |

| Holiday Post |
[Dec. 23rd, 2009|02:48 pm] |
I've been keeping a low profile lately, mostly because the undying infection is still riding my sinuses like a nighthag and I've been unable to think anything other than dark thoughts of pain and torment. Acceptable if this blog belonged to a down-on-his-luck Juggalo, but less becoming here, I think. I don't anticipate being around too much over the next few days so happy holidays to everyone, and let me leave you with these fine Alvistide offerings:
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-04wkIk84B8-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-7I6Fw5LUY
- Some wag's also posted one of my favorite songs from Rabbit Habits: "Poor Jackie"
- This:
 - Molly's Paper Fruit Flash Fiction Contest ends on Saturday, so there's still time to earn yourself some loot instead of relying on hand outs, you bum.
- And, finally, I give you this, with my blessing:
I love you all.

Ugh. We went to New Leaf last night to procure the echinacea tincture. When we got home, I felt like crap. So apparently I have the Imp's sickness. I can't say that I'm really surprised, but there it is.
Happily, the Imp *loves* the tincture. I ended up getting an echinacea/eyebright blend. I haven't spoken to my OB yet, but the bottle says I shouldn't take it. So I'll just suffer through. This morning the Elf started with the sneezing and coughing, so he's been dosed as well. He, however, hates the taste. So I mix it with orange juice (which they've both been mainlining).
I need to find someone local with a kitchen scale to borrow the use of. I have dried echinacea that I want to use to make a tincture for future use. But I didn't bother to weigh it at the store, so I have no idea how much I have (it was purchased from the bulk department). I guess my brain was thinking fluid ounces at the time instead of weight ounces. Oops. |

So I know that the Red Line from Harvard to Davis was completely screwed, with shuttling going on, but I'm wondering if anybody had issues with buses from Davis just... not coming? Specifically the 88.
We waited for an 88 heading to Lechmere with a young woman who had apparently just missed the last one, and we stuck around ten minutes past the arrival date (courtesy of mbta.com) of the 88 at Highland and School and then finally just took a cab. Returning at the end of our evening, ten minutes past the show-date for an 88 heading to Clarendon from Lechemere, we saw an 80 and took that instead. We texted a friend and there was nothing on the web site during that time about bus-fail.
Anybody else? It was f'ing cold out there. |

[Dec. 22nd, 2009|12:22 pm] |
Let's see. Yesterday was the Solstice. We had a fire, made our wishes, ate homemade pizza, and opened gifts (or at least the kids did). That was that.
Before that, I made many many cookies. At least, I made the dough and froze it for later consumption. Chocolate-espresso snowcaps, chocolate-espresso shortbread (do you see a trend here?), gingerbread cookies (that still need rolling and cutting before I can freeze them), and chocolate sugar cookies. Much butter was harmed in the process.
I made a rancor for the Elf for Solstice. I was convinced that he'd hate it - he has this need for everything to be perfect. So imagine my surprise when he absolutely loved it. In fact, he's been playing with it almost non-stop since opening it. The Imp, on the other hand, didn't really care about his gift. He was much more interested in the wrapping paper. Am I surprised? No. I'm really, really not.
This Friday is Christmas. B has off from then until.. the 4th? of January. I'm not sure exactly what day he goes back. But it will be very nice to have him home. Undoubtedly he'll be heartily sick of us by then, though.
I have a mess of crafty things I want to do. But they'll have to wait for B's time off. I want to make fleece slippers and a busy book for the Imp. Both projects sound fun to me. I also need to send out those "meme gifts" before the end of the year (why yes, I do intend to put it off as long as I can). I still need to make sure I have proper addresses for people.
Over the weekend we had to take the Elf to urgent care at our doctor's office. It turns out, however, that he does not have a UTI. This is good, but also weird - why would he have had pain if there wasn't anything wrong? And why would antibiotics have fixed the pain if nothing was wrong? I don't get it, but at least he's feeling better. Of course, now that he is.. the Imp is getting a cold or something. He's all runny noses and sneezes. I'm hoping to find some echinacea tincture at New Leaf since I've been to slackish to make my own. |

| Does Modern Brewer read LJ? |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|05:00 pm] |
I noticed in Modern Brewer a new sign has been put up behind the register. It lists a number for the main (NY) store, and says if you ever have a problem with one of the staff members, to call it. If the owner is not available, it lists another number for the Western MA store. It goes on to say that rude or disrespectful behavior by staff is unacceptable, so I wonder if they read messages here about the problems other have had.
I have to say that I've only had good experiences there, occasionally I get a sense of "I know what's right, but if you MUST buy that malt instead of the other I guess so", but that's something you get from any hobby store. Just stick with "I really would like to use this", and they'll move on pretty quick. Of course, I also happen to have a penis, so YMMV. |

| How to find a notary public |

I have a completely ignorant question. I have a document that I need notarized by end of business tomorrow. How do I find a notary public? I have no idea where to even start, beyond a google search, which I did do. I'm worried that a lot of businesses that often have one 'on call' may not because it is a holiday week.
Thoughts? I'm in Davis all day today and nearby tomorrow as well.

It's amazing how B walks the Imp to sleep. First, there's the Arctic Monkeys (their first album) playing louder than you'd expect. Then, B holds him all funky, facing up and cradling his head so he's watching the ceiling. And there's this swinging, swaying walk that he does. The Imp's eyes slowly close. Then B rests him against his chest and walks for a bit more.
It's adorable. And magical. And it makes me realize just how lucky I am to have them both. |

Hi, I found a pretty nice camera while I was out sledding on President's Hill at Tufts and would like to return it to the owner!
- Casio Exilim with a 4 gig SDHC SanDisk card
- was found at the bottom of the hill, in the snow, had been there a while
- pictures of kids sledding earlier that day, a church/choir event with a banner in Portuguese, and what looked like a Christmas event at Medford High School
Please send this around to anyone you know.

| Snow Emergency LIFTED Effective 4 p.m., Sunday, 12/20 |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|04:15 pm] |
The City of Somerville has lifted its snow emergency as of 4 p.m.,Sunday, December 20, 2009. Residents parked in municipal or school lots during the snow emergency have a two-hour window starting at that time in which to move their vehicles. Cars still parked in city lots at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening may be subject to ticketing and towing. Residents, landlords and business owners are required by city regulations to shovel their sidewalks but may not shovel snow into the street. For more information, please dial 311 (627-666-3311 from outside Somerville) or visit the city’s website, www.somervillema.gov |

Due to a mix up at Zazzle.com, I ended up with about 30 calendars (for 2010) for some dog-related business out of state. Zazzle sent out my real order, and told me to keep the calendars and I'd like to find an organization, elderly housing or something that might want them. They're not bad, but I don't need 30 calendars of dogs I don't know. I'd like to not drop off 30 individually. Any ideas? |

| So how random is snow emergency enforcement? |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|11:01 am] |
I'm new to Somerville this year, and wanted to use this storm as an opportunity to see exactly how snow procedures work here. Ten minutes before Tom Champion called, I had moved my car into a municipal lot. Then I sat back to see if we really could park on the streets, so long as it was on the odd side. (I'd prefer my car be within sight of my building, rather than two blocks away.)
5pm came around, and no one else on the street moved their vehicles. 9pm came around. A couple cop cars drove past, and a fleet of tow trucks a bit later, but none stopped. I woke up this morning to find every car still parked on the even side of the street (Linden, off of Somerville Ave- right across from the police station!) No tickets, no towing. The plows had just cleared the odd side instead.
So now I'm feeling a little gullible, having been the only person on the street to move. What if I had parked on the odd side like the city said- would I have been ticketed for blocking the plows because everyone else stayed where they were? |

| Where to buy powdered bleach? |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|09:46 am] |
Which stores around here sell powdered chlorine bleach? Tired of lugging around bottles to do a wash. I've seen little single-wash boxes in vending machines at the cleaner's, but doesn't anyone sell a two-pound box of this? This isn't the same as color-safe bleach, which is fine, but once in a while I like to wash with actual chlorine. |

| Ticketing for Street Cleaning? |
[Dec. 20th, 2009|09:47 am] |
At the time of the season's first snowstorm last December, the City of Somerville announced that street cleaning was to be suspended for the remainder of the year. As far as I know, they haven't made such an announcement this time. Obviously street cleaning will be impossible once the emergency is lifted (at least for several days), but could they still be ticketing for illegal parking per the street cleaning schedule?
You'd think that common sense would prevail here, but having recently been ticketed for parking near a fire hydrant that had been labelled "out of service" for weeks, I know that isn't always the case with the city. |

| Red Velvet Cake |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|07:46 pm] |
Hello all. Faithful lurker but seldom poster here....so be kind. Just wondering if any of you happen to have/recommend a recipe for Red Velvet Cake. My daughter and I are thinking of making it for Christmas, but as I've never made it before, I have no idea where to begin; don't know what it tastes like, or what it's supposed to taste like. It's just RED. (my fav color) :D Which we thought would be cool for Christmas.
Yes, I can google REDVELVETCAKE, but thought I'd ask for something from a live person for a change. Well, as alive as you can be on the other end of this machine, especially after a weekend Blizzard (in which I have YET to see snow falling...).
Anyhow, I want cake. :D Got any good recs?? Much appreciated. |
